Creating character sheets

Image
Creating character sheets Daisy Jackson / 28/02/2022 In order to create an accurate prototype of my final piece, I need to know what my character will look like. Since I am creating various versions of Marie Curie, I decided to create a simple character sheet that will allow me to manipulate her appearance with ease for when I make modifications. Along with this, I will create separate character sheets which will go into detail about each section of my flipbook.  As well as this, it will inform me which colours I have used as well as allow me to understand improvement steps. Here is my character sheet for the basic Marie Curie:

Character-based tasks

Image
Character-based tasks Daisy Jackson / 28/02/2022 For today's session with Molly and David, we were set some character-based tasks. The first task involved turning simple shapes into our historical figures. The shapes chosen would determine the overall sizing and proportions of the characters. Here is what I did today: I did not enjoy this task as much due to the shapes given. In comparison to the task with Matt where we experimented with mark-making, there was less flexibility with this. This made me feel quite restricted. However, it has made me think more about proportions and general presentation. After this task, David introduced us to his playing cards challenge. In this task, we had to recreate playing cards using our historical figures. We were required to create one playing card that had our historical figure face on, and the other playing card sideways.  Here are my thumbnails: For my 'side on' playing card, I decided to tackle the idea of X-rays involving Marie Cu...

Making a flipbook prototype

Image
Making a flipbook prototype Daisy Jackson / 23/02/2022 Today I decided to make a prototype of a flipbook. I decided to use random characters for this experiment as I have not designed the variations of Marie Curie which I am going to add in the future. Instead, I used my own characters which are monsters. Doing this helps me understand the layout and approach. It will also help me understand what to improve on and how I can design Marie Curie for this book. Since this is extremely rough, the layout is quite messy but understandable! For this rough, I went with the idea of 'Monster Mess up' as this has alliteration and is appealing to kids. I designed a front cover as well as the back which will be professional when I tackle it for my final piece.  Inside the book, I created four variations of monsters which were separated into three sections: the head, torso, and legs. Each of these roughly went into the other when mixed around (again, very rough and messy but understandable). ...

Researching into aplastic anemia

Researching into aplastic anemia Daisy Jackson / 22/02/2022 Due to my focus being on my flipbook which focuses on Marie Curie's death, it is a necessity to conduct research on this as I do not want to spread misinformation. Marie Curie died from aplastic anemia. This is from being exposed to radiation for several years. There are two different types of radiation that I will be discussing in this blog post. The radiation poisoning that Curie died from was chronic aplastic anemia (happening over a period of time) while the other type of aplastic anemia is acute (happening suddenly). I did not know how many different types of radiation poisoning there was until today... The video below (click on the image!) discusses what radiation poisoning does. He mainly discusses acute radiation poisoning and discusses the symptoms being: Prodromal: vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and anorexia. Latent: You would feel better but test results would show otherwise.  Manifest illness: Incredibly awful...

Creating a flipbook prototype - Radiation

Image
Creating a flipbook prototype - Radiation Daisy Jackson / 22/02/2022 After having a tutorial with Matt, he mentioned that I could create an itneresting flipbook using perspex. I was not too keen on this idea as I was quite interested in my other one involving the horse as the main character. However, I do need to try new ideas out and challenge myself. I do not like the idea of perspex, but I am warming up to the idea of the flipbook as children love these types of books due to how interactive they are. When thinking of the idea for this flipbook, my mind went blank. I wanted the flipbook to be interesting and gripping for the child. I wanted to use the idea of skeletons and radiation but did not know where to start.  I started creating a rough plan to see what my mind came up with until I finally did! Below is my rough plan (unfinished as I need to do extra research now): For this flipbook idea, I will look at the stages of radiation as this is what unfortunately killed Marie Curi...

Character stamp making

Character stamp making  Daisy Jackson / 22/02/2022 Unfortunately, due to 'Storm Franklin' I was unable to attend yesterday's lecture (21/02/2022) as all my trains were cancelled. Once again, apologies for this! I still remained productive however as I carried on with concept ideas for my main project. Looking at the task brief, Molly and David tasked us to create our own character stamps. For this we were required to use three stamps. One was for the head, one was for the torso and another for the legs. I brainstormed various characters which I found interesting.  I ended up choosing quite a simple character but the fun thing with linocut printing is that you can draw over the top or you can create backwashes which add more interesting effects to the piece itself. I created this character with this intention in mind. Here are my thumbnails: I did remember originally that linocut prints of course flip the drawing. However, when actually carving, I seemed to forget this... De...

Creating a book prototype - Based on the horse character

Image
Creating a book prototype  - Based on the horse character  Daisy Jackson / 20/02/2022 Today I set myself the task of creating a prototype of one of my ideas. I was crossed between the idea regarding the horse being arrested and also Matt's idea of creating a flip book. After speaking to family members it was mentioned that children love flip books as it is interactive. I acknowledge this and want to include this idea of flip books into my idea regarding the horse being arrested. I will make a prototype of the flip book idea too but I want to focus on the horse idea for the time being as I am very interested in seeing the results of this. On Tuesday (22/02/2022) we will be having an online paper folding session which I am very interested in. This will be very helpful for creating my book as I can use some of the ideas mentioned in the call. However, so far I have only made my first prototype. This will be the first of many and even now I am still making alterations for my idea...

Artists to help inspire my work

Image
Artists to help inspire my work Daisy Jackson / 14/02/2022 On this page will be artists who have helped inpire my work so far. As I have been researching, I have made notes on particular artists who have grabbed my attention.  Matt Groening Both my characters Marie Curie and George Washington appear to be quite moody and straight faced in their photos. I wanted to capture this element within my own work which led me to observe the art of Matt Groening. Groening is responsible for the art of The Simpsons! I have looked at his work a lot in the past few weeks as part of research as I noticed the show had the most guest appearances in the history of animated TV shows! I can take many elements away from this art style such as facial expression, celebrity appearances (how they're drawn), colours used (to match with the bright colour approach from my survey) and general humour. The Simpsons is also very widely known and is a favourite for a lot of people! This definitely makes me think w...

One day projects - Week 4 - Illustration typography for valentines day

One day projects - Week 4 - Illustration typography for valentines day Daisy Jackson / 14/02/2022 Today marks the final one week project! Due to it being Valentines day, Matt decided to base the project around this theme. We were tasked to create an illustrative typography which focuses on this theme. However, we could not be basic and create 'Happy Valentines day', instead we had to think imaginatively with the word play and illustrations. We also had to go against our normal art styles. This is why I decided to work more traditionally for this project. Here are my thumbnails: I really loved these ideas as a lot of them were play on words and were quite visual. My personal favourites were the 'Love? I'd rather have coffee' (playing around with the steam), and the worms one! I also loved the squirrel one as this used a lot of the surroundings as part of the text. In the end, I decided to go with the coffee one as this is quite play on for a lot of the individuals si...
