One day projects - Week 3 - Superglue Poetry

Unfortunately, I could not make it into today's session due to personal reasons, but I still looked at the brief and gave it a go!

For our 'Superglue Poetry' brief, we were told to select various pages (with words on of course) and told to observe the words on the pages. We had to select phrases, words, etc to create a sentence. Everything else would be blocked out. We had to think about various ways to present these words which involved experimentation.

I started off by photocopying newspapers and random pages out of books. This created various interesting results. I then created 10 thumbnails based on ideas that were generated from these pages.

Here are my thumbnails:

I found identifying words to create sentences and meaning quite difficult. It took me a while to finally settle down with ideas that I wanted to develop.

My developed ideas:

For this the words I chose to keep read as 'COURT OF CRIMINAL APPEAL' which was a page found in a book based on law that I got last year. These books are great for my art as I am able to use them for experimentations (I used them for my linocut prints in the last project of semester 1!). For this I wanted to create a relation to the words and chose to draw a mini robber who was then surrounded by cross hatching. This way you were drawn to the robber and the words presented above. I really enjoyed this piece as it was simple and interesting. It also used interesting techniques!

Since we have to focus on mark making while also being creative, I thought it would be interesting to highlight the repetition of '£1000' and surround the words with dollar/pound signs. This was a lot better in my head! It looks quite messy and rough but at the same time...it is different. You have to observe quite closely to be able to tell exactly what you are looking at which I like. Sadly though, the '£1000' was not very visible in the end...

I found this one extremely fun to draw! I took the words 'Boris Johnson' and 'targeting his wife' and immediately thought about him commanding missiles to be sent at her. Quite morbid but very stupid and weird! I found drawing over Boris while blacking out the surrounding areas quite effective and interesting. This piece demonstrates a range of approaches. I also love the comical effect of 'X'ing' out his wife's eyes. Again, definitely did not mean this in a morbid way but more of a strange approach.

This piece follows a similar approach to the previous but is less full and messy. It is very simple...Boris Johnson has a cruel IT job...

I love the comical effect of the tears leaving his eyes, the whole idea itself is quite strange! I would definitely do smaller cross hatches as an improvement though. The smaller the cross hatch, the more pleasing to the eye (in my opinion anyway).

When I saw this in the newspaper, I knew I had to use it! Chicks doing acrobatics is definitely weird and interesting! I decided to highlight the words 'flexible chicks' and 'give animals a voice'. Does it make sense? Kind of. The words definitely match the images. Without the images though, this sentence would definitely not work. For the experimentation process for this piece, I wanted to use dots mixed with my grey copic marker. This way you can faintly see the words behind the dark grey, but your'e still distracted by the non blacked out words as well as the dots (created in a white posca pen).

After this, I chose two images to develop further.

These are the actual pages I used:

These are the final results:

Rather than everything being traditional, I wanted to finally play around with the ideas through digital. I combined photographic elements with digitally drawn ones to create this final image. I also experimented with the merge tool as well as opacity. Despite this being the 'final' image, I definitely prefer my original. I loved the raw/rough appearance and how it experimented with different materials. It also seemed so chaotic that it worked well with the contents. However, with this piece I love the mixture of approaches as well as differences in colour.

I really love the turnout of this one! Definitely one of my favourites. I wanted to focus mainly on photographs and see what I could do with this. This combined with the merge tool really helped as it created an 'old' appearance. For the individual in the image, I wanted to portray someone who looks quite angered to fit in with the words above (COURT OF CRIMINAL APPEAL) as I wated consistency. To fit with this consistency, I altered the saturation of the image so that there was no colour left. This made everything fit together nicely. I also really like how the words look as though they are imprinted on the individual's skin. Definitely was a fun end to the day!
