Reflecting on survey research

 Reflecting on survey research

Daisy Jackson / 01/02/2022

Since launching my survey, I have gathered enough results to gain an understanding of my target audience of children. The specific age range I am aiming for is roughly 5-10 year olds. Maybe even 5-12 depending on the style of my art for the piece. I have reflected on the results and will analyse them below.

- Top three children TV shows (from list)

In this question, I asked the individual to select their top three favourite children's TV shows from the list of ten. However the top three were not their favourite but what they feel is their child's favourite/children they look after.

The Amazing World of Gumball = 12.5%

Adventure Time = 12.5%

Regular Show = 18.75%

Phineas and Ferb = 6.25%

The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy = 12.5%

Kim Possible = 0%

SpongeBob SquarePants = 25%

Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends = 6.25%

Powerpuff Girls = 0%

Avatar The Last Airbender = 6.25%

Reflection:

What I can gather from this question, is that of course, 25% of participants chose SpongeBob SquarePants as one of their top three. This narrows art styles down as well as humour.

I am also able to reflect on how nobody chose Kim Possible and Powerpuff Girls. Either there is a common factor within these two shows or they just did not capture the liking of the participants. Interesting!

- Favourite TV show out of three selected

The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy = 20%

SpongeBob SquarePants = 40%

Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends = 20%

Avatar the Last Airbender = 20%

Reflection:

Once again, SpongeBob SquarePants has taken the lead! This narrows everything down and I can focus on this show in particular and base my illustrations around it. As well as this, I am also able to look into the other 3 shows mentioned as unfortunately, no other shows were mentioned.

- EXTRA MENTIONS

This question was added as a way of gathering extra research. As I was asking a range of individuals from different age groups, I thought it would be interesting to see what these individuals enjoyed watching as a child growing up/generally wanted to mention.

Willow the Wisp
Noggin the Nog
Captain Pugwash
Ben 10
Oggy and the Cockroaches
Courage the Cowardly Dog
Bluey

Out of all of these, the show that captures my attention mostly is 'Noggin the Nog'. After doing a quick search on this show, I found that there was a lot of mediums involved! It looked as though card and watercolour was used to create a lot of the scenes as well as very little movement. I really enjoyed watching the mini clips. At the beginning of every project I always struggle during the experimentation process. I want to be able to try out new approaches and mediums! This TV show has definitely introduced me to new ideas.

The other show which caught my attention is 'Bluey'. This definitely seems to be a newer children's TV show which I am less familiar with. However, I do remember seeing merch for it where I used to work! This definitely shows that kids are engaged with it and love it. After googling, it definitely has key features that I should be considering after reflecting on this research. There is a bright colour palette involved and everything seems very simplified for the child.

Humour, education or both

In the survey, I asked whether the participant thinks it is important for the children's TV show to be comedic, educational or both for the child.

Humour = 40%
Education = 0%
Both = 60%

I am quite shocked at the results as I did not think I would be staring at 0% for education. However, the fact 60% of participants voted for both is quite helpful as this means I can of course, focus on both for my illustrations.

Adult humour - yes or no?

When beginning my research, I thought about adding adult humour to my illustrations as this could reach my main target audience of children and also capture the interest of adults too. However, the results definitely were not what I thought they were going to be!

Adult humour = 40%
No adult humour = 60%

This doesn't mean that I cannot add adult humour as it is the opinion of a selected few people. However, I feel like I should respect this and focus more on entertaining the child. This is something I should priotise either way anyway.

Colour palette

As a final question, I asked the participants to tell me which colour palette they feel is best for children's TV shows.

Bright colours = 100%

This definitely shocked me! I thought that there would be a variety of options to be honest! However, this is not an issue as I am quite happy making everything brightly coloured/using primary colours. This is important for the child regardless as depending on the age, the individual is able to make colour associations. This is present in SpongeBob SquarePants which I will be widely researching into.

REFLECTION - PLAN OF ACTION

Originally, I was going to make a second survey based off of these results. However, the results have shocked me as I did not think there would be a dominating answer! This dominating answer is SpongeBob SquarePants - popular when I was young and still popular to this day. I will more than likely not create a second survey as I feel like I have gathered the needed amount of information.

My next plan of action will be further research. This research will include looking deeper into SpongeBob SquarePants and Marie Curie/George Washington. However, it is important to note that I will not be doing both of my historical figures as I want only one to be my main focus. I will eliminate one historical figure by creating rough character design. Quickly drawing whatever comes to mind will help me think about my creative process and who I find more interesting. After this, I will do further research into whichever figure I choose so I am able to find more interesting stories to create illustrations on. The research into the information gathered today will also contribute towards this.
