Creating my mix and match flipbook prototype
Creating my mix and match flipbook prototype
Daisy Jackson / 06/03/2022
Today, I set myself the task of creating my second prototype for this mix and match flipbook. The book binder rings came in handy for this as well as cardboard and card!
Due to this being a rough, I was not fussed about how it looked. As long as I knew roughly what to do and improve on was all that mattered.
I started off by creating the base of the book which was made out of cardboard. I stuck three pieces together with cellotape which ended up looking like this:
I was EXTREMELY happy with the shape of this! It turned out perfectly and bended the way I wanted it to.
After this, I decided to stick paper over the top with cellotape (messy but again, this is only a prototype luckily). After this was done, I then glued card to the front and insides to provide me with an idea of the colour combinations. I decided to go with a green front and back cover with a red spine. Inside the book will be yellow back pages which have mini Marie Curies randomised across them - this acts as a nice and interesting pattern.
After this, I hole punched pieces of paper together and added the book binding rings in the holes. This was then glued to the book itself.
What problems did I come across?
The first major problem I came across was of course, the materials that would be used. Cellotape and paper/card will not be pleasing to the eyes as well as professional. After seeing how this looked, I am definitely leaning towards paper mache. This will then be painted over with the colours I want. After this, I will cut out the designs which will go on the front.
Either this, or I could print out the design and glue it on top - this will stick look messy though (I think anyway!).
Another problem that I immediately spotted was the size of the book binding rings. They measured at 28mm which was too large for this book. I could of course, make the book bigger but I personally love the size as it is. It is a shame though because I loved the colour of the rings and cannot find them anywhere else at a smaller size.
To fix this, I have orderd silver book binding rings that measure at 20mm - these are coming tomorrow. This should help the book close easier and will be less difficult to fit.
Majority of the other problems arised due to the sizing of the book binding rings. This will hopefully be solved tomorrow. These problems included the paper not sticking well as well as of course, the book not closing.
Another problem was the positioning of the hole punch for the pages. With my hole punch I could not get a good angle. This will be solved by Wednesday as I have ordered a more manual hole punch online - very excited to use this!
There was also a problem with the pages themselves. For some reason I decided to fold the pages and not slice them seperately. This of course caused more difficulty when it came to closing the book as well as turning the pages.
General other problems were the designs. I have not created a front cover yet but I wanted to do this after seeing the prototype. Other designs such as the beginning few pages which will be created shortly are still in the making - this also applies to the back cover.
What is my action plan?
Tomorrow (07/03/2022) I will begin to create the front and back cover. If I have enough time, I will also focus on the introduction pages. My new book binding rings should be here as well so I will be able to see if the sizing fits better and make ammends.
After this, hopefully by Wednesday (due to the hole punch coming by then), I will be printing out what I need and actually creating my book. However, this time frame could be later as I am not sure how long it will take me to come up with the front and back cover as well as the introduction pages.
I also have a book binding session tomorrow (07/03/2022) with Molly which will be interesting and helpful.
There will be a lot of trial and error here and a lot to learn from!
My aim is to finish this book in the next two weeks which will provide me with time to create my two vignette illustrations as well as focusing on my storyboard for my animation module - I will then be able to create my animation and experiment more which is exciting.
Here are images / a video of what I have added to my prototype:
