Creating my official book - the base

Creating my official book - the base

Daisy Jackson / 07/03/2022

Looking at my last prototype, I have a lot of alterations to make!

Originally, I loved the base of the book as the cardboard fit perfectly together. However, when closing the book, the spine was extremely large and of course, made the book larger. I did not like this in the end and wanted it to resemble a more tight fitting book. I altered this and made the spine smaller as well as altering the straightness as I noticed it was slightly slanted.

I recently ordered more bookbinding rings which I ended up not using, however, I did use them in a quick tryout which I will get into more detail about shortly.

After deciding not to use these rings, I decided to use actual bookbinding rings found in a book. I went to a shop at university and found an artist skecthpad for £1 which had a perfecting setting of bookbinding rings - I bought two! I began to remove all the paper and card.

Here is what it looked like:

It is a shame it isn't in colour but hey! It is the perfect shape and thickness so I got lucky.

After removing all the paper and card from this, I decided to go back to my prototype which I altered earlier. I was speaking to my Mum and she mentioned that she had some adhesive felt. Originally I was thinking of using this felt as the actual front cover but after brain storming, I thought it would be better if I used this as a base which I would add my covers over. I added this felt to the whole book.

These are the results:

Words cannot describe how happy I am with the turnout of this! From what could have been a tacky appearance, definitely has the potential to become a professional-looking book. If I just added my cover directly over the cardboard it would have been very sharp and less professional. I am glad this idea was brought up by my mum!

This is everything I have so far for the physical book itself but I did try out a quick idea using the new bookbinding rings (20mm rather than 28mm) as well as some hooks I bought from uni.

Here are the results of this idea:

I did not choose this idea in the end as it just did not have a professional book 'vibe' to it. I could have used the same technique as before but the bookbinding rings were too large and did not look sturdy. The bookbinding rings I got from the artist sketchpad work a lot better presentation-wise as well as practice - very tedious though!
