Vignette Illustrations

Vignette Illustrations

Daisy Jackson / 06/03/2022

After looking at the checklist again for this module, I realised that we were required to draw at least two vignette illustrations. These two illustrations had to be based on life events of our chosen historical figure.

To do this, I went over the notes I made again on the life of Marie Curie. I loved the idea of focusing on the death of her husband Pierre as this was such an unfortunate and bizarre story. As well as this, I also wanted to focus on it because I decided not to for my book. Another idea I focused on was the rumour of her body apparently still being radiated to this day.

These are my two vignette illustrations:

I really love this illustration. I played around with the idea of her death being caused by radiation poisoning as well as including other facts such as the year of her death and the rumour of her body still being radiated to this day. The strange organisation of the piece is also interesting as everything is placed in a strange way - the dirt being so lumpy and having a sign emerge from it as well as it leaking green fluid. I also love the flower that is dead - caused by the radiation.

This piece is definitely quite a collage. I remember in a lecture Matt showed us examples of storyboards and cartoons - one of these included an anime which represented a collision/crash through drawing the character's face onto the shards of glass which were covered in blood. I loved this idea and wanted to create it in my own way. Due to the horse being attached to the carriage (at the time of Pierre's death), I thought it would be interesting to create a divide in the drawing through a wagon wheel as well as stars - I have also included words. As for Pierre, I made my work child-friendly through the use of bright colours and an animated face. I am really happy with this!
